Personal Biography:
Tonia Betancourt is a psychotherapist who has been treating children, adolescents, individuals, couples, and families since 1994. She received a master’s degree from Bryn Mawr College and has extensive post graduate training in the area of family and play therapy. Tonia received extensive play therapy training from the Family and Play Therapy Center in Mt. Airy.
Tonia is a registered play therapist and is credentialed as a supervisor of play therapy. She provides training in the areas of play therapy and parenting skills.
Tonia also offers individual and group supervision for mental health professionals working toward their "Clinical Social Worker" license.
Tonia brings a wealth of life experiences to her practice that includes raising her own children, being an involved decision-maker in the community and managing her business. Tonia also teaches at the master's level at several area universities and enjoys mentoring students and new clinicians.
Philosophy:
Tonia Betancourt comes to her work as a therapist from a contextual family therapy model in which each person is considered within the context of his or her family system. In this tradition, there is an inherent honoring of each person’s perspective and particular attention paid to issues of fairness, entitlement, and invisible loyalties. Tonia is also trained as a play therapist and within the context of family therapy she works with children and teens.
